Manchester’s canal system is a runner’s paradise, with lots of clear pathways providing a seamless transition from the bustle of the city to the quiet down by the water. The main route around the city a refreshing 6.8km run with minimal elevation. Jump in at Liverpool Road for a quick glimpse of the Museum of Science and Industry before exploring the city’s industrial waterways.

Looking for something a bit further afield? Check out our top pick of runs around greater Manchester - a great change of scenery and good for the mind, body and soul - what’s not to love?

Rochdale Canal Path. The signature canal path runs in Manchester. One can run 30+ miles to the Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire! But if you are looking for a smaller run, try the 5 miles from Castlefield Basin to Oldham Rd.

Salford Quays. A short 4k run, but a fun one with lots to see taking in the Old Harbour and uses the two pedestrian bridges connecting the river Irwell which can get a beautiful view from first thing in the morning. Run right through MediaCityUK and do some celeb spotting on route!

Ashton Canal Towpath. Another pleasant canal towpath, this one with a more industrial vibe. Two miles one-way from the Alan Turing Memorial to Philips Park.

Bridgewater Way Path. Take the lovey Canalside path heading south from central Manchester. The run perfect for football lovers as you run right past Old Trafford and back!
