There has never been a bigger variety of podcast out there to choose from. What better way to spend time indoors than letting your mind drift away listening to some of your favourite Mancunians talk about crime, football and everything in between.
We’ve picked out some of our favourites here…
Brian Cox OBE, born and bred in Oldham, is a physics and astronomy professor who is now a well-known face on British TV teaching science in a fun and exciting way. His podcast, The Infinite Monkey Cage on BBC Radio 4, is a mashup of science and comedy and is one of the Beeb’s most popular.
Hosted with comedian Robin Ince, it is a witty and irrelevant look at the world, according to science. With special guest stars like Dara O' Brian and a new topic every week from UFOs to Antibiotics, the mix of dry British humour and incredible facts makes it an essential listen – and with more than 120 episodes available, there’s lots to catch up on!
We can't mention anything Manchester-based without mentioning the 'F' word. Football is a Manchester institution after all, and the Official Manchester United Podcast is a perfect nod to the beautiful game with insights from club legends like Eric Cantona and Paul Scholes.
The presenters, Sam Homewood, Helen Evans and David May, are funny, insightful and draw some fantastic stories from the guests. For example, don’t miss Dimitar Berbatov's story about being kidnapped while playing for CSKA Sofia – a truly unbelievable tale.
If you love true crime stories, make sure to follow Mancunian Rebekah as she writes letters to prisoners waiting to die on America’s notorious death row. The three-part series looks in particular at Rebekah's relationship with convicted murderer Charles Thompson who has been on death row for 22 years. Charles and Rebekah become friends, and throughout the podcast, you see Rebekah struggle with the ethics of writing to a convicted killer.
As the listener you go back and forth wondering if Rebekah is just naïve, confused as Charles comes across as such a nice man, or toying with the question of whether a murderer can ever be redeemed? We recommend listening to them all to find out!
Macclesfield born Crouch's podcast is been a runaway hit. Peter is joined by Tom Fordyce and Chris Stark for their weekly tongue in cheek look at how to be a professional footballer. From the role of agents, how to look cool in the dressing room to the best place to sit on the team bus, it's a perfect 20 minutes of escapism and fun!
